Frequently Asked Questions

What types of ice do you use?

Our Ice is as clear as a pane of glass. Ice found in nature or as you would make it in your freezer is always milky, fractured and porous. This is because air is trapped in the ice along with other impurities. This natural dirty ice melts quickly and is an unsightly, non visual ice that cannot be lit or carved effectively. We had to spend a great deal of money and time experimenting to enable us to make clear ice of unsurpassed quality.

Do you ever use moulds?

We specialize in extremely high quality, hand carved sculptures in crystal clear ice. With moulds it is not possible to make the ice clear and they do not have the same lifespan. We also like the fact that each carving is unique. We have some standard designs but each one comes out slightly different. Our customers that use ice carvings for marketing also think it is great that no two are the same and assists their creative concepts.

Which tools do you use to create the ice sculptures?

We make use of a variety of industry specific tools and machinery, from imported Ice Chisels to chainsaws, from Computer Programmed engraving machines to ice lathes. We wear special Arctic clothing when carving, as we work at -10 degrees centigrade.

What is the lifespan of an ice sculpture?

It depends on the ambient temperature of the environment that the ice sculpture is being displayed within. It also depends on the carving. Fine details melt quickly. We will carve larger than normal features so that as the sculpture melts it will become more handsome. For finer detail we use snow fill engraving work.

Stylized impressionist features work very well. This type of sculpture will hold its integrity up to 8 hours depending on the temperature. Direct sunlight and wind is also not good for the ice. If we exhibit outdoors we try to place the carving in the shade and out of any draft.

What about the melting ice?

All of our ice carvings include drainage facilities, from the very small to the very large. We display most freestanding carvings on special light boxes. As well as illuminating the ice the box also incorporates a drip tray and a system of containers that catch the water. We have a variety of light boxes and drip trays to suit most requirements. If necessary we can make up special drip trays to suit requirements.

Do you offer lighting and colour for the sculptures?

We make use of lights to colour the ice. Our crystal clear ice responds to light with amazing results. We can match Corporate Brand colours or assist with the look and feel of the event.

We also make use of 'colour fill' work where we create colour Logos and design work inside the ice. ‘Snow fill’ is another option where the image is engraved and filled with snow; the lighting colour enhances the white snow brilliantly.

What can be done in Ice?

The dimensions of our ice blocks are 1000mm X 500 mm X 300 mm. This means that each block weighs 110 kg's. We can carve any shape that will fit into such a block. We can also weld two or more blocks together. We have to plan such a carving carefully because of the weight.

We have done male and female torso's, lions, cows, cars, airplanes, clowns, swans, clams, articles frozen into the ice, fruit frozen into the ice and even company logos are engraved into the ice. Almost anything that you can think of can be done.

Product launches, product promotions, corporate communications, weddings, events, stag nights, hen parties, media releases, press calls – Ice carvings guarantee a sensational stir at any event.
